Compagnia di Punto

Biography

© Cécile Brossard

“…It was an epiphany”.

Hanna Eisenbart on July 1 2019 in the Rheinische Post, Düsseldorf

The musicians’ individual stories have their roots in Europe, Asia and America; in metropolises and bustling urban hubs or in endless landscapes of archaic tranquility. Their common history has its beginnings in the early music scene in Cologne. As Compagnia, a primary objective of their work is to convey the relevance of early music within the present exploring and examining it in the light of contemporary compositions. Innovative concert formats dissolve conventional structures and establish ties to literature and dramaturgy.

Beethoven CD

“… Apparently Beethoven’s Third also doesn’t require the perfection in sound in order for the great Sinfonia eroica, performed by the Compagnia di Punto troupe, to come across compellingly enough and like new – namely in an arrangement for only nine instruments, composed in 1818 by Beethoven’s contemporary Carl Friedrich Ebers. With an interest in both publicity and financial matters, the Master was really quite fond of the arrangement… provided his meticulous performance indications were in accordance with the original notation in terms of dynamics and articulation. Two violins, a viola and flute, plus two each of clarinets and horns and a double bass are all that is required. The wind parts are prominent, and the symphony’s revolutionary élan comes to the fore: its expansiveness in the opening Allegro movement and the pallid funeral march, in the vibrating Scherzo and the final movement. The presence of mind and vitality of nine superbly motivated players transport the listener into the symphonic (functional) chamber music of yore, first and second symphonies included. Today: a rare Beethoven experiment.”

Wolfgang Schreiber on March 2, 2020 in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Munich

Beethoven-Project

“…It was an epiphany: every note, every harmonic shift in the 1st symphony is already well-known, but the transparency, the attention to the essentials was made incredibly coherent and truly captivating in this version with just 10 musicians…”

Hanna Eisenbart on June 1, 2019 in the Rheinische Post, Düsseldorf

“… raw, tough, focused, and with sharp accents is how the Beethoven symphony comes across. While the strings deliver sharp incisions, the woodwinds strive for warmth. The effect is excellent. Far removed from pathos and sacrament, the listeners discover what early 19th century rock’n’roll was about…It is a wonderfully intimate evening because the musicians are passionate about their work…”

Michael S. Zerben on August 1, 2019 in the online magazine O-Ton

Rosetti CD

There have been a number of musical declarations made for Mozart’s contemporary Antonio Rosetti, but none are as persuasive as this one by the Compagina di Punto. This… ensemble unites the necessary bite it takes to give the music a boost and a keen sense of balanced, cultivated sound, well-rounded expression and the more Haydnesque than Mozartesque charm inherent in Rosetti’s tone… More of the same please!”

Matthias Hengelbrock in the February 2018 issue of Fono Forum
