“Bruno Weil is a treasure chest of musical knowledge”; this, in any case, is what a young conductor once stated when asked about exceptional figures among his generation of teachers. However it also requires the conductor’s absolute resolve to pass on this knowledge to the orchestra and transform it into an interpretation. Bruno Weil is one of the conductors who can achieve this. Another feature that distinguishes Bruno Weil is his insistence on absolute textual exactitude in music making. But textual exactness alone is not enough; it must be inspired. Only in this way can it help the music develop its own inherent vitality. After finishing his teaching career as a Professor of the Salzburg Mozarteum University, Bruno Weil has restarted to conduct the major orchestras like recently the Dresden Staatskapelle in January 2020. Since the 2018/19 season, he has served as first guest conductor of the Bruckner-Orchester Linz.

Such a performance was Tafelmusik’s Ninth Symphony of Beethoven, presented this weekend at Toronto’s Koerner Hall. Under the masterful direction of conductor Bruno Weil…
The orchestra…was committed to the music and to the performance in an almost superhuman way. We always talk about an orchestra playing as one person, animated by the same mind and spirit. It seldom happens. On Sunday night, we were awarded a first-class demonstration. Winds and brass were in fine balance; second violin parts, usually buried, were clear and revelatory. The sheer physical energy the orchestra engaged in playing a still very taxing piece was impressive.
To conductor Bruno Weil must go a lot of the credit for the superb performances. Weil is a no-nonsense kind of guy when it comes to Beethoven… He set quite brisk tempos for all four movements of the symphony and, more to the point, kept those tempos consistent throughout the movements (with very few exceptions), with almost fanatically disciplined precision. No slowing for the dramatic parts, no shading of tempos to make a musical point, The result was a Ninth of intense propulsion, full of the drama that Beethoven clearly intended to be its hallmark, shapely and taut. Weil never allowed the plot of the music, its musical coherence, to falter…”

Haydn-Cycle
Bruno Weil devised a cycle of the London Symphonies by Joseph Haydn presented with moderation. In six concerts, each featuring two of the London symphonies, Bruno Weil takes up the cudgels for Joseph Haydn, who to this day unfairly remains in the shadow of Mozart and Beethoven.Â
